Tidal park

Royal HaskoningDHV has designed multiple tidal parks. Tidal parks make high and low tides visible again in the urban environment and offer space for nature development and recreation. Water flows in and out of the area with mud flats and vegetated areas. In tropical areas mangrove forests can develop. The development of the area is stimulated with e.g. brushwood groynes and the edges can be protected with rock armour (hybrid solution). Excess dredge material can be used to build up the base of the park. Natural processes (erosion and sedimentation), within limits, are encouraged within the park.

Tidal parks can increase biodiversity and function as ecological stepping stone. Elevated footpaths through can offer a nice view and enhance the possibilities for recreation, education and aquaculture. A tidal park attenuates waves and grows with sea level rise and can therefore also contribute to sustainable coastal protection.
